Nanoscale electron transport at the surface of a topological insulator

چکیده
The use of three-dimensional topological insulators for disruptive technologies critically depends on the dissipationless transport of electrons at the surface, because of the suppression of backscattering at defects. However, in real devices, defects are unavoidable and scattering at angles other than 180° is allowed for such materials. Until now, this has been studied indirectly by bulk measurements and by the analysis of the local density of states in close vicinity to defect sites. Here, we directly measure the nanoscale voltage drop caused by the scattering at step edges, which occurs if a lateral current flows along a three-dimensional topological insulator. The experiments were performed using scanning tunnelling potentiometry for thin Bi2Se3 films. So far, the observed voltage drops are small because of large contributions of the bulk to the electronic transport. However, for the use of ideal topological insulating thin films in devices, these contributions would play a significant role.

متن کاملZeeman effect on surface electron transport in topological insulator Bi2Se3 nanoribbons.
Topological insulators have exotic surface states that are massless Dirac fermions, manifesting special magnetotransport properties, such as the Aharonov-Bohm effect, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, and weak antilocalization effects. In the surface Dirac cone, the band structures are typically closely related to the p-orbitals and possess helical orbital texture. Here we report on the tunabilit...

Three-dimensional topological insulators host surface states with linear dispersion, which manifest as a Dirac cone. Nanoscale transport measurements provide direct access to the transport properties of the Dirac cone in real space and allow the detailed investigation of charge carrier scattering. Here we use scanning tunnelling potentiometry to analyse the resistance of different kinds of defe...
متن کاملSurface-dominated transport and enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit in topological insulator Bi(1.5)Sb(0.5)Te(1.7)Se(1.3).
We report the observation of an order of magnitude enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT = 0.36) in topological insulator Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 nanowires at 300 K as compared with the bulk specimen (ZT = 0.028). The enhancement was primarily due to an order of magnitude increase in the electrical conductivity of the surface-dominated transport and thermally activated charge carri...
متن کاملRole of surface-roughness scattering in double gate silicon-on-insulator inversion layers
The effect of surface-roughness scattering on electron transport properties in extremely thin double gate silicon-on-insulator inversion layers has been analyzed. It is shown that if the silicon layer is thin enough the presence of two Si–SiO2 interfaces plays a key role, even for a very low transverse effective field, where surface-roughness scattering is already noticeable, contrary to what h...
